Esperanza Spalding! She needs no introductions! (and I can’t belive that we haven’t blocked about her yet!)
At just 26 (she’s 25 days younger than me!) she won a Grammy for best New Artist (beating Justin Bieber!)

I was lucky enough to see her perform at the Malta Jazz Festival where she was amazing; playing with that charm and aura which surrounds her – here are 2 memories

Caravan Palace

I only came across Caravan Palace a few days ago (although then I realised that I already had some of their tracks on other chillout compilations). This French electro-swing ensemble produce quite an alternative sound to the traditional swing. I can’t decide which is my fave song so I’m posting 3 videos below…

Quite a pleasant song here..

Quoting an interesting note about how Koop makes its music…

When listening to Koops music it’s somehow easy to believe that it’s played by a small orchestra, but in fact the music is based on samples. Thousands of small clips from records puzzled together into new songs. All the drums, strings, horn sections and choirs are actually sampled!

This is a very time consuming way to make music (it’s one of the reasons it takes such long time to make a koop album), but it’s the only way to create the surreal Koop sound. One thing though, that for sure aren’t sampled, is the vocals…

Four Tet

Still discovering tracks from the new album There Is Love In You, but I’m really liking the electronic sound mixed with some jazz influences. Four Tet is the name used by Kieran Hebden, (from London) for his experimental electronic music-oriented solo efforts.

Corinne Bailey Rae

The Sea is the second studio album by English singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae, (most famous for ‘Put Your Record On’) released on 20th Jan, available 1st Feb (according to all the Underground posters)

I am listening to it right now & haven’t chosen the best one yet -- but I’ll be too greedy not to share her music.

Upon its release, the album received generally positive reviews from most music critics. Several critics viewed it as a sign of artistic growth and maturity for Rae. About.com’s Mark Edward Nero gave The Sea 4.5 out of 5 stars and praised Rae for her emotional depth, writing “although this is a very personal, emotionally rich album, it celebrates life’s beauty more than it wallows in it’s darkness”.

Other critics said:

Rae has emerged sombre yet defiant with a stunning record that rises above expectation.

Rae’s vocal twists and turns sound magically organic..

The Sea “boasts an unusually crisp sound”
