To keep up with the John Lewis tradition… here comes this year’s Christmas ad.

And since this is a music blog, I’m going to skip the “leaving the dog in the cold” controversy out of this and let you enjoy the song!

This year’s song is Your Song by Ellie Goulding originally by Elton John. Somehow they always manage to put me right in the mood for Christmas.

I think John Lewis is making a habit out of this, taking a modern singer to cover an old song and play it during the Christmas session, and possibly making the Top 10 in the charts as well. I’m all for this - so much much better than last year’s christmas number 1.

The best thing about this song is it’s sincerity. It doesn’t try to appeal to a large market, nor is it an obvious attempt at sounding current; it presents itself with honesty. Amongst all the Christmas cash-in re-releases; the gimmick Christmas singles; the X Factor Winner’s Single; and the countless number of Facebook campaigns, Ellie Goulding’s cover of ‘Your Song’, whilst being part of a re-release itself, creates a sense of sincerity, like you know Ellie’s releasing it because she wants to, rather than because she wants some big sales over the Christmas period.

She’s always a woman – Fyfe Dangerfield

Here is another advert from John Lewis. The song is “She’s always a woman” (originally by Billy Joel) a cover version by Fyfe Dangerfield, and one of his tracks on his new album ‘Fly Yellow Moon’

Such a beautiful song, don’t like the overall image of ”the woman” in the advert, it’s like she has no other thing to do than taking care of her family. But that’s my opinion, and it really doesn’t matter.

Sweet Disposition

The song Sweet Disposition, that was featured earlier last month, is quiet the popular song these days — among ad agencies, at least. It has so far been featured in ads for Chrysler, Rhapsody, the movie 500 Days of Summer, and most recently Diet Coke. As if that weren’t enough, it has also been used in official conjunction with 90210, Greek, The Good Wife, and The Deep End. Some of the more attentive consumers are calling upon advertisers to find a new favorite song before this one attains sentience and enslaves humanity.

Thinkbox’s Nov/Dec Awards for TV ads stated that John Lewis’ ‘The feeling’ was the 3rd best ad.

I remember seeing it in christmas and it really captured the feeling, especially with its very gentle version of Sweet Child of Mine (a rock classic by Guns’n'Roses) by Taken by Trees.

Pantene TV commercial

Thai Pantene television commercial. Its simply brilliant. The story of a deaf and mute girl who learns to play the violin against all odds. I have to agree, it is one of the most touching advertisements I’ve seen in a long, long time.

Quoting The Inspiration Room:

Inspired by a street violinist playing Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major, a teenage girl practices on the violin, perhaps one of the most difficult instruments to play without hearing. She is hampered by her cruel peers, in particular a girl who aims for greatness on the piano. Again and again the violinist returns to the street player for inspiration, finally making it to a classical music competition. Throughout the film we’re shown a chrysalis opening to reveal a butterfly. During the final scenes the girl’s hair is revealed as a symbol of her shining, along with a brief shot of the Pantene Chrysalis Shampoo bottle.

Magic seems to occur when an ad campaign can serve as an inspiration!

Somehow, City and Colour are reminding me of Aqualung…

Aqualung is the stage name of Matt Hales, a British singer and songwriter who writes these very piano-centred and intimate-sounding pieces.
One of my friends may be interested to know that the song Strange and Beautiful (second song in the playlist below) was used in a TV ad for the Volkswagen New Beetle
