Lana Del Rey is the stage name of Elizabeth Grant (born 1986 or 1987), an American singer songwriter.

Lana Del Rey’s Video Games released this week after already securing over 2 million YouTube hits. The song was named “Best New Track” by Pitchfork and was featured on The CW TV-Series Ringer. Tickets for Grant’s show in London sold out in half an hour.

Her voice is so captivating. It’s so unique and never heard a voice like that.

Last December, Danii wrote a post introducing Stalko just before their intimate gig at Coach and Horses. The gig was brilliant and we were really delighted with the fine acoustic melodies together with intricate song writing – really good stuff.

Having been ungenerously branded as ‘Sissy Folk’ by some punk, I think this little (Maltese) ‘daydream orchestra’ consisting of 3 of my many acquaintances, Chris Cini, Timmy Ellis and Mike Stivala are too cool for school.

They perform folk/ pseudo-indie rock music under the name ‘Stalko‘… and they’ve only been around since 2009!

To keep up with the John Lewis tradition… here comes this year’s Christmas ad.

And since this is a music blog, I’m going to skip the “leaving the dog in the cold” controversy out of this and let you enjoy the song!

This year’s song is Your Song by Ellie Goulding originally by Elton John. Somehow they always manage to put me right in the mood for Christmas.

I think John Lewis is making a habit out of this, taking a modern singer to cover an old song and play it during the Christmas session, and possibly making the Top 10 in the charts as well. I’m all for this - so much much better than last year’s christmas number 1.

The best thing about this song is it’s sincerity. It doesn’t try to appeal to a large market, nor is it an obvious attempt at sounding current; it presents itself with honesty. Amongst all the Christmas cash-in re-releases; the gimmick Christmas singles; the X Factor Winner’s Single; and the countless number of Facebook campaigns, Ellie Goulding’s cover of ‘Your Song’, whilst being part of a re-release itself, creates a sense of sincerity, like you know Ellie’s releasing it because she wants to, rather than because she wants some big sales over the Christmas period.
